Thank You Woburn for Conserving Whispering Hill Woods!

Northeastern University and Whispering Hill Woods

Most of the 74.5 acres of the Whispering Hill Woods parcel has been left in a natural state for many decades. The result has been the creation of a vibrant green oasis which along with the surrounding park land has been recognized by the State of Massachusetts as a Priority Habitat for Rare Species.

Surrounded on three sides by protected public park land, any large scale development would disrupt the continuity and serenity of the public park. However, in concert with the surrounding park land and conservation areas there is a combined area of approximately 300 acres.

Northeastern University's Whispering Hill Woods provides a central campus for exploring one of the last great wildlife refuges and public parks in the Metropolitan Boston area.

The best use for Northeastern University's Whispering Hill Woods is the one that is in keeping with the mission of Northeastern University and the one which can use the land for its educational value with the most positive environmental impact.

The existing structures can be refurbished or partially refurbished as funding becomes available to support an educational Summer program for children.

The refurbished greenhouses would provide an ideal learning space for a variety of environmental awareness programs. Modeled on educational programs run by the Massachusetts Audubon Society and with the support of the local community these programs would provide an opportunity for Northeastern University School of Education students to gain valuable experience in hands on environmental education.
